A BRIEF HISTORY

Rugby is New Zealand's passion...and arguably Northland's most cherished and widely followed form of entertainment...to most it is more than that...it is a way of life...when not involved in it, we are talking, reading or telling stories about it. Northland Rugby has been in existence officially since 1920 - then known as North Auckland Rugby Union - however the first details of rugby matches played in the Northland area date back to the 1870's.

That proud sense of history and the traditionally innovative style of Northland Rugby is reflected in the passionate support and active involvement of players, supporters, volunteers and businesses throughout the region. Northland continues to boast the largest number of clubs in New Zealand, one of the largest geographical areas within New Zealand and a network of Sub Unions and players that epitomises the core strength and grounding of rugby in the provinces of New Zealand
