A BRIEF HISTORY

The Nelson Bays Rugby Football Union was formed in 1969, from an amalgamation of the Nelson RFU (founded 1885) and the Golden Bay-Motueka RFU (founded 1920). Home matches are played at Trafalgar Park, Nelson but these were shared with Rugby Park, Motueka until 1995. After the first National Championshi started in 1976, Nelson Bays remained in the 3rd Division until promotion to the 2nd Division in 1992, and won this Division in 1999. Nelson Bays has had two representatives on the NZRFU Board, Peter Wild and Murray Sturgeon - NZRFU President in 1994.

Three Nelson Bays players have represented the All Blacks - Trevor Morris, Terry Mitchell and Todd Blackadder. Nelson was home to the first game of rugby in New Zealand on 14 May 1870 between Nelson Rugby Club and Nelson College.
