A BRIEF HISTORY

The King Country Rugby Football Union was formed in 1922, by amalgamation of the first King Country union (founded 1905 and renamed as Taumarunui in 1922), Ruapehu (founded 1908), Maniapoto (1907) and Ohura Valley (1920).

Until 1949, King Country played in light blue and green, then switched to maroon and gold hoops. The Unions representative players who have played for the All Blacks were: Bill Phillips (1937-38), Jack McLean (1947), Ron Bryers (1949), Colin Meads (1957-71), Stan Meads (1961-66), Graham Whiting (1972-73), Kevin Boroevich (1983-88) and Phillip Coffin (1996) The Union is famous for the Meads brothers, Colin and Stan. Pinetree played 133 games for the All Blacks, 55 test matches, of which 31 were on the trot. Stan played 30 games for New Zealand and played in 15 test matches.
