A BRIEF HISTORY
The Hawke's Bay Rugby Union was formed in May 3, 1884 when four clubs - Napier, Petane, Napier Union and Hastings - met at the Criterion Hotel in Napier.
There were 12 clubs in existence at the time from Wairoa to Central Hawke's Bay, but only the city clubs attended the meeting to form the union.
Hawke's Bay is a foundation member of the New Zealand Rugby Union, the seeds for which were sewn in Napier and promoted by Hawke's Bay's secretary Ernest Hoben, a Napier journalist, who became the first NZRFU secretary.
Hoben's staunch ally was Francis Logan, a Napier barrister, father of Hawke's Bay rugby, referee, selector, inaugural NZRFU Appeal Council (1893-94) member, a member of the first NZ selection panel 1893-94, and twice NZRFU president (1894 and 1909).
Hawke's Bay has provided many of the Legends of All Black Rugby - George Nepia, Maurice Brownlie, Cyril Brownlie, Jimmy Mill, "Bull" Irvine, Bert Cooke, Kelvin Tremain, Ian MacRae, Billy Davis among 43 Magpies to have worn the Silver Fern.
The union enjoyed two magnificent Ranfurly Shield eras in 1922-27 (23 defences) under Norman McKenzie (selector 1916-1946 and NZ selector 1924-25,27-30,47-49, life member 1950) and 1967-69 (22 defences) under Colin Le Quesne (selector-coach 1959-1969)
